At Malaika Safaris we are guided by the principles of fair trade. This means ensuring that our partners – lodges, camps, and hotels treat and remunerate people fairly, and source what they need responsibly, just as we are committed to treating our people fairly and to take account of these principles in selecting partners and managing our supply chain.
But for us, the principles of fair trade go beyond this. They apply to the way we do business; they apply to the way we interact with you. We are a business but strongly believe that what you pay for your safari must be fair, fair to you.
We participate in the community, support conservation, and are passionate about ensuring that wherever your safari takes you that your trip will be respectful of the need to preserve nature and wildlife, and to be respectful of local customs and traditions.

Malaika Safaris hugely proud to support and make more widely known the work of The Small Things (TST), a voluntary not-for-profit and non-governmental organisation based near Arusha, in Northern Tanzania.
There are more than three million orphans in Tanzania – often the result of inadequate access to good healthcare, sickness or an inability to survive conditions that would be treatable elsewhere. The Small Things strives to keep children with surviving relatives, but despite every effort, sometimes there isn’t anyone available to care for the children, or extended family members are so poor that they are unable to house, feed, clothe and educate a grandchild, niece or nephew.
The Small Things has a two-pronged approach. Orphaned children and those unable to return home are welcomed and cared for in a family-style, community-based accommodation residential care TST’s Happy Family Children’s Village. This attachment-focused home offer stability and a happy and safe environment for children, surrounded by love and given the opportunity for a brighter future.
The aim however is always for children to be living in their village, within their community, either by reuniting them with a parent, or with a part of their extended family, or within an adopting or foster family. All children deserve homes and families – poverty is never an acceptable reason for a child to be in an orphanage.
Of the children who our cared for at the Happy Families Children’s village, about 80 percent have lost their mother, often as a result of death during childbirth, 10 percent have been abandoned, and 10 percent have either suffered abuse or been severely neglected.
For each and every safari bought from Malaika (or through an agents with which we partner) we will make a donation to support the work of The Small Things. So when you go on a Malaika Safari you will not only discover and experience Tanzania’s exceptional wildlife, landscapes and culture, you will be contributing to the care, education, health and happiness of a child like Ebenezer. Ebenezer weighed only 2 pounds when he was born; his mother died in childbirth. In and out of hospitals and prone to respiratory diseases due to lung infections, Ebenezer probably wouldn’t have survived those tough early months had it not been for TST. Instead, with one-on-one trained care and access to the best specialists in the country, he was given all the support he needed to grow into a happy, healthy little boy. Today he is 5 and thriving at Happy Family Children’s Village… still charming everyone he meets.
If you wish to visit the Happy Families Children’s Village in Nkoaranga, Malaika Safaris would be delighted to arrange this as an extension to your safari itinerary. Indeed, for those who want to discover even more about the communities and have a really immersive experience, you might wish to go on a Social Impact Tour. These tours are organised by The Small Things (with all proceeds going to support the children, families, and TST’s programs), but we will work with TST to ensure the seamless planning of your safari in the National Parks, Zanzibar, or Kilimanjaro, and the community visit.
